Types of Spill Pallets for Different Applications

A spill pallet is essentially a bunded secondary storage item that is specifically designed to hold drums of fuels and oil, usually in an intermediate storage tank or in a 205-liter drum. It is used as an at-will container for all types of liquids, stored or transported on-site or off-site. The original manufacturer's name is also stenciled on the side of the pallet. Some manufacturers offer different types and sizes of spill pallets depending on the volume and type of fuel or oil that will be stored or transported.

A spill control professional will suggest the best type of pallets for different jobs. There are different types of spill management equipment that fall under the realm of spill pallets. The most popular type of spill control device is the sump pump. The sump pump is used when an oil or gas spill occurs in a container that the company has marked as a secure storage area. Once the spill occurs, a sump pump is used to remove the spilled materials from the affected area and place them in a new holding area for further containment.

The pump will draw away the contaminated fluids through drains or canisters located throughout the worksite. Some companies also use steel drums as stand-up spill containment pallets. The steel drums are manufactured using high-quality galvanized steel and are designed to withstand some of the harshest conditions.

Steel drums are often used as stand-up drums, mounted directly onto concrete floors, or they can be mounted onto a forklift truck. In addition to steel drums, some companies use plastic drums as spill containment pallets. These plastic drums are not as heavy-duty and are often used to transport lighter liquids such as gasoline or diesel.
